Pelvic floor training for men: the complete start
Pelvic floor training sounds like a women's topic at first. It isn't. In men, the same group of muscles drives much of what works in bed – from erections to control over ejaculation. This article explains what it is and how to start properly.
## What the pelvic floor is The pelvic floor is a layer of muscle and connective tissue that closes off the base of the pelvis – like a hammock between the pubic bone and the tailbone. It supports the internal organs, controls bladder and bowel, and is closely linked to the erectile tissue of the penis. Like any muscle, it can be trained.
## Why it matters for erection and control During an erection, two pelvic floor muscles help hold blood in the erectile tissue and build pressure. When they are strong and well controlled, the erection stays more stable. The same muscles are involved in the ejaculation reflex – more control there often means more control over timing.
## What the research shows The evidence base is small but encouraging. In a randomised controlled trial of 55 men, targeted pelvic floor training measurably improved erectile function (Dorey et al., 2004). For premature ejaculation, a 12-week programme increased time to ejaculation from around 32 to 146 seconds on average (Pastore et al., 2014). Important: these are small studies. They suggest training can help – it is not a guarantee.
## How to start The first step is simply finding the muscle. After that, a few minutes a day are enough at the beginning: short contractions, a deliberate release, calm breathing. Consistency beats intensity – short and daily beats long and rare.
## What to realistically expect Muscles don't change overnight. Noticeable effects usually take weeks, not days. If erection problems persist or appear suddenly, they should be checked by a doctor – training does not replace a medical diagnosis.
