Performance pressure in bed: getting your head out of the way

Sometimes the problem isn't the body but the pressure in your head. And that pressure is tricky, because it feeds itself: the worry that it might not work makes exactly that more likely.

## The loop that feeds itself An erection needs a relaxed state of the nervous system. Tension and worry, however, flip the body into alarm mode – which tends to work against the erection. A single "failure" then becomes an expectation that rides along next time. The body reacts to the thought, not to reality.

## Why understanding already helps Knowing that a mechanism is at work here – not some fundamental "something's wrong with me" – often takes the pressure off by itself. It's not a character flaw but an understandable stress response. This de-dramatising is the first step.

## What actually eases things Shift the focus away from "is it working?" toward what's actually there – touch, closeness, no goal to hit. Calm breathing lowers baseline tension. And openness with your partner removes the stage on which the pressure grows in the first place.

## When more is needed If the strain persists or becomes a burden, professional support (medical or psychological) is sensible and normal – not a sign of weakness. Persistent physical problems should be checked by a doctor anyway.
